Upgrading harddrive to SSD - Things to do before upgrading

If you own an old, slow laptop, it is a great idea to upgrade your laptops hard drive to SSD.

Specifically if you were thinking to buy a new laptop because the old one doesn't cuts it anymore, consider upgrading the old one and see. Very likely it will give the old laptop 1-2 years of life saving you a ton of money.

Other than hard drive you may also need to upgrade the memory (RAM), just check how much RAM you currently have and how upgradable your laptop is.

Note that this it not a technical guide. I will not cover step by step how to change the SSD, or how to install Windows after you upgrade, or which SSD you should get based on your laptop’s model.

For those you need to do it yourself with the help of some other videos and articles or get it done by an expert.

Still you would need to know a few things so that it all goes well and you do not loose any data or waste money.

So, it will delete your C Drive, other drives will be intact. So you do not need to worry about storage, but only take care of the files stored in the C Drive.

But you will seriously need to take care of the software and apps and app data. As these will all be removed.

Make a list of things to do. I have done it like these.

Check this things before upgrade the SSD of your laptop.

1. Check all the apps and software that you have in your laptop. Note down the once that you need to install immediately. Especially, note how to install the softwares that you have purchased license. Software like MS office, Abode Creative cloud or other softwares. Mostly you need to note down the login credentials and licence key.

2. Make sure you have access to the Microsoft account. As it’s very essential part of Microsoft store and Windows OS. You may have purchased some app in MS store you will loose those if you loose your Microsoft account.

3. Take backup of important files. Certainly for C Drive. Also, important files in other drives in case some unfortunate even occurs.

4. Take backup of Windows. So this can be a bit tricky. You can watch videos how to take backup and restore it later. Or you can hire someone to do this for you. Or you even can contact Microsoft support they will guide through the process of taking backup of Windows in a DVD or pen drive.

5. Check what IDs your browsers logged in with. Your bookmarks and other details are saved with your account, so when you install the browsers after you upgrade your bookmarks, extensions, preferences will be preserved, may take some time to download though. Just make sure you have the access to the account ones you upgrade.

6. Take backup of saved passwords in all the browsers. They are supposed to come back when you login to your profile that is connected to your browsers, but, why take such a risk when you can get the backup in just a few clicks. Take the backup in external storage, like pendrive.

7. So, I have asked several times to note which account you are logged in with. Thing to make sure is…if you are not sure what’s your passwords, recovery, 2 step authorisation, authorisation app and so on, now is the right time keep those in check while you have the access.
